Buddhism and Psychology
The last several decades have witnessed tremendous advances in the scientific understanding of the human brain and the human body as a whole. The interdisciplinary dialogue of leading scientists, philosophers, contemplatives have brought increasing interest of using Buddhist wisdom for insight into several research topics and to illuminate the human condition.
From their earliest days, Buddhist traditions have emphasized the importance of the mind. Over the last 70 years, the divergent though complementary traditions of Buddhist psychology and Western psychotherapy have been cross-pollinating. Despite significant differences of origin and methodology, these traditions both emphasize the ultimate healing nature of the mind. In the Abhidharma, the Buddhist cannon of psychology, we find a rich and remarkably nuanced description of the mind and its capacity to heal.
